Hains: Looking Ahead: Shea Weber
The Habs #1 d-man is not getting any younger and with 7 years to go on his mammoth contract, he's here to stay. - Karine Hains
as we talked about it earlier this week, totally agree here. I think we have to consider Weber as a 2nd pairing dman from now on. a very good and expensive one, but still a 2nd pairing guy. 20-22 minutes per game, with lots of PP time which are easy minutes.
Habs should now fear a Petry injury, much more than one to Weber. who would have guessed? |

I think Weber could still play 25+ minutes on certain nights but not too often, otherwise he'll be dead tired at the end of of the season. have to manage his time a bit like they do with Price actually.
that's why I think they need to trade for a real top 1 dman if they want to have a chance at the playoffs. |

Great post Karine.
I have been thinking that this off season has no excitement so far by Bergevin in that we need to write these posts to keep people interested.
He needs to address still RW and LD, and not really take an existing quality player away, the way this team is, unless the players have better or same production as last year with much more from KK and Poehling and Kinkaid can get some wins while backing up Price that is the only way they will make the playoffs

I really love/like all of your latest blog « looking ahead » Special K!
This was another solid blog in the dog days of summer and I’m grateful for that.
I disagree that Weber’s best days are behind him. Still think he’s got more than a couple of solid years in him. Yes rest and good health is a must . |

Weber is a 2nd pair d man at this stage. He's still within the range salary wise for 2nd pair. |

I think Weber is still a #1 Guy. The problem, and don’t have a heart attack Francophone, is that you’ve got a #6/7 if not AHL level LD partner lined up with the guy when he’s used to Ryan Suter, maybe he got a season with Markov in there too, unsure, but having to cover and make up for Mete would make Larry Robinson look like Griffin Reinhart out there. Get Great Players so they can work alongside other great and/or good players so you’ve got a great team. Don’t get a total Stud and pair him with a Burro and wonder why you’re team has one foot in the race and one foot hanging from the edge of the pack mule cliff. Just saying... |

I think there are about 25 other issues with the Habs that one can discuss. Shea Weber's shortcomings are not in that top 25.
Anytime you want to give away this "old and slow" future hall of famer...please...ship him over to the Oilers. We will give you Yamamoto...who is young and fast. |
|

Look at the total cash payouts. Weber will play 3, max 4 more years. The last 3 years are $1m each and the 4th last year is only $3m. Weber will be fine for 3 or 4 years, frankly he'll likely be the Habs best d man the entirety of that span. Absolute worst case scenario the Habs buy him out for pennies and (frank) Nashville or force a trade so they can LTIR him. He's still a number 1 by any measure and frankly much better as a complete d man than many teams #1's who aren't questioned because of age. His demise has been greatly exaggerated. But don't fear...we get to listen to the hot takes that July and opposing fans tend to bring |

^this. Weber is not only not a problem, he's one of the bright lights...probably the Habs best skater (not as a fast skater just meaning a non goalie) |

There is not much looking ahead for Weber. 2 years, maybe 3, down the line and he is a 5-6. I still think the Habs missed the boat by not trading him last spring to a contender for a boatload of prospects and picks. |

It’s July, decided to do a looking ahead feature for each player of the team since not much is happening, got to at least try to get some hockey talk going in here sometimes...can’t all be about new cars and movies all the time |

If Weber decides to retire a few years down the road then Nashville will be on the
hook for the cap recapture penalty.

That's why he's so underrated by a lot of fans, unless there's a decent power play giving Weber the looks to unleash the rocket of a slapper he has, he's just a really good overall defenseman. There's no "flash" to his play. He's just *solid*. Doesn't fight, doesn't look for the big hits, just does his job. |

^this is it. Doesn't need to fight. He's a one man police squad. People stay in line for fear of waking the sleeping monster |

Weber will be fine. They'll need to find him a decent partner though. |
